Vintage Oaks Residents Grossed Out At Glore Museum (Vintage Senior Living Campus, St. Joseph, MO)
After going through the Glore Psychiatric Museum on Tuesday morning, residents from Vintage Oaks walked away with the relief of knowing that the treatment of mental health has improved, ten fold. Seeing the treatments that many mental patients suffered and lived through makes us appreciate the use of many drugs that we have today, instead of the torturous treatments of yesterday. The museum shows the history of the treatment and study of mental illnesses. We saw many devices, equipment and methods that were used from the late 1800's to current time.
One thing that really stood out to all of us was the stomach contents of a former patient who liked to swallow different things. There were over 900 items that were undigested in her stomach and consisted of safety pins, screws, thimbles, beads, buttons, coins, straight pins, salt shaker lids and about anything else you could imagine. Needless to say, it was a very interesting day. Although, the mind still has so many secrets that need to be explored, the study of mental health improves almost daily. If you haven’t been to the museum, I highly recommend you going. Have a great weekend!
God Bless,
